Position Description:
We are seeking an associate pastor for music and one additional area of ministry. The additional area of responsibility will depend on where the associate pastor’s gifting, education, and experience intersect with our congregation’s needs. Our interests for this additional area of ministry include children’s ministry, Christian education, small group development, executive pastor, or youth ministry. Our preference at this time is for an associate pastor of music and children’s ministry. Initially the position will begin as part-time (20 hours a week) with incremental increases in financial support, as soon as and until the church can afford a full-time position. The current support package includes a house, paid utilities, insurance reimbursement (can be converted to salary), a part-time salary, and non-cash benefits.
The initial part-time position will be dedicated exclusively to building and leading our music ministry. As support is increased the additional hours will be dedicated to the additional area of pastoral responsibility. This is an elder position (1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-2:2, and 1 Peter 5:1-4). We are looking for someone who values congregational singing as the primary musical instrument with all other instruments accompanying, encouraging, and supporting the congregation’s singing. We do not value music for music’s sake or purely artistic expression. We are seeking to use music to make much of God and not ourselves or our musical abilities. Our service contains both traditional and contemporary music.
Qualifications:
- Character:
- As all human beings as fallen, we are not seeking a perfect person but one whose life and character have been conformed to the Scripture’s requirements for elders as given in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-2:2, and 1 Peter 5:1-4.
- Theology:
- The associate pastor should already adhere to the inerrancy of Scripture, a historic orthodox theology, a historically Baptist understanding of the church, and the Regulative Principle of Worship.
- The associate pastor also needs to be in agreement with Grace Baptist’s Declaration of Faith and compatible with the Senior Pastor’s philosophy of ministry which can be summarized as, “The Scriptures are foundational, the Gospel is central, and Gods glory is preeminent.”
- Education:
- An M. Div. is preferred with an accredited, ministry-related undergraduate degree being the minimum requirement
- Ordination is not required but expected after being called to serve at Grace Baptist Church
- Experience:
- Leading in a congregational worship service
- Leading and building a worship team selecting both traditional and contemporary music
- Previous church staff experience is valued but not required
- Abilities:
- Ability to faithfully teach the Scriptures
- Ideally proficient on organ, piano, and acoustic guitar but minimum proficiency on the organ and either piano or acoustic guitar
- Proficiency in music theory
- Willingness to exercise and submit to proper authority
- Pastorally minded and biblically discerning in selecting song lyrics
- Abilities that harmonize well with and balance out the gifting of the Senior Pastor
Additional Information:
Given the support we are currently able to offer, we understand most applicants will want to seek additional employment until we can offer full-time support. We are willing to work through any needed transitional phase, be flexible in scheduling, or offer the church’s facilities for private music lessons in order to bring an associate pastor to Grace Baptist. In addition, you will receive the support and encouragement of the congregation, staff, and Senior Pastor. For the right applicant, coming to serve at Grace Baptist is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the sake of the Gospel and the glory of Christ.
